NATURE’S BIRD’S EYE VIEW: KLAUS LEIDORF

words by kurt robins.

Photographer – Pilot – Aerial Archaeologist

About Leidorf

Even as a child, Klaus Leidorf enjoyed taking photographs from a variety of angles – he had no idea at the time that it would one day become his profession. He studied theology – but realized that it was not his calling, so he switched to prehistory and early history.

After completing his studies, he worked in the State Office for Monument Preservation in Munich and after two years he was asked to take over aerial archeology for Bavaria. To do this, he got his pilot’s license and from the end of the 1980s, Klaus Leidorf’s workplace was largely in a Cessna 172, several hundred meters above the ground.

The Interest In Klaus’ Work

He documented and rediscovered many thousands of archaeological sites. Over the years he also observed the changes in the landscape, especially due to people, which he still captures photographically today. In addition to a few renaturation projects, it is unfortunately the enormous increase in land consumption that can be easily documented from above.

Starting out as a “waste product” today as an internationally sought-after wall decoration, Klaus Leidorf delivers new, fascinating artistic images with every flight. From the most atmospheric motifs through special incidence of light – to snapshots of city and country life – to abstract images that pose a great mystery to the viewer.

Customers from all over the world enjoy his works – including presentations at all important international art fairs by Roy Seifert from the Contempop art gallery (Tel Aviv/New York).

A wide variety of customers from the media industry are also interested in Klaus Leidorf’s work – this ranges from images for advertising campaigns, to documentaries and radio broadcasts about his work, to illustrated books with various publishers. Architects also like to use his images to enrich projects.

In addition, exhibitions are held again and again to captivate people with selected motifs.
